The word philately, in its French form philatélie, was first used by Georges Herpin in Le Collectionneur de Timbres-Postes magazine on 15th November 1864. The term philately comes from the Greek words phil(o) – loving and atéleia – exemption from payment (because a postage stamp indicates prepayment of postage). Philately as a hobby for collectors began to spread in Slovakia in the late 19th century. From this period, we only know of individual philatelists.
