T2 50 g responds to the rate of postage of the 2st class up to 50 g - domestic servis. © Slovak Post, 2008 During Christmas, the feast of Nativity, the Slovak Post will introduce a stamp that depicts an interesting Flemish painting from the collection of the Slovak National Gallery (SNG), dating from the mid-16th century with a motif of the Holy Family. The 16th century Dutch and Flemish paintings displayed in the Slovak museums and galleries were previously owned by local nobility and affluent entrepreneurs. Sophisticated collectors, particularly local industrialists, admired Dutch paintings, including this painting of the Holy Family. It was painted in tempera on an oak panel by an Antwerp painter of the mid-16th century, and purchased by the SNG from a private collector in Košice in 1958. According to I. Ciulisová it is from the studio of an Antwerp painter of lesser significance, inspired by the work of Quentin Massys, another Antwerp painter. According to the above scholar, the painting is associated with the work of an anonymous Antwerp painter, usually referred to by scholars under his pseudonym, Master of the Mansi Magdalene. The Italian motif of the Virgin Mary’s kiss, the typology of the face of St. Joseph and the perforated sleeves of Mary’s clothes are typical of this unknown painter’s style. The Christological cycle of the Christmas issue is supplemented by the FDC, which depicts another painting from the collection of the SNG of no less significance, dating to 16th century Antwerp. It is the central part of the ‘Triptych of the Adoration of the Magi’, which probably came from the studio of Jan Mertens the Younger (born between 1454 and 1470 in Antwerp, died in 1527 in Antwerp). This altar painting served for private Mass purposes. Its side wings depict the Nativity of Christ and the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The triptych was purchased in 2004 from the Office of the Bishop of Banská Bystrica, and is currently owned by the SNG. Martin Vančo
