The issue called the Entry to the European Union is published to commemorate the historical day on which the Slovak Republic is becoming a Member State of the European Union. The European Union (EU) is a family of democratic European countries, committed to working together for peace and prosperity. The idea of European integration was conceived after the World War II. It was first proposed by the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in a speech on 9th May, 1950. This date, the “birthday” of what is now the EU, is celebrated annually as Europe Day. The European Union has delivered half a century of stability, peace and prosperity. On 1st May, 2004 the biggest ever enlargement takes place with ten new countries accessing the European Union. In November 2003, the accessing countries decided to publish a common stamp issue – United Europe. The author Jean Pierre Mizzi from the Malta Post designed the stamp, FDC and cancellation. The present issue is published in the accessing countries pictured on a printing sheet. Each one of the countries has its own flag pictured in the left bottom part of the stamp. The FDC depicts a symbolical map of Europe with the names of accessing countries. The cancellation was designed using the symbol of European Union – twelve stars surrounding the map of the Slovak Republic.
