Alexander Dubček was born in November 27, 1921 in Uhrovec. Already in his young days, he was engaged in illegal anti-fascist activities and fought in the Slovak National Uprising. From 1949, he devoted his professional carrier to public and political work. From January 1968, under his leadership, the liberalization process dubbed Czech and Slovak Spring—an effort at democratization of the society—began that gained great approval and affection on the whole world. After the violent severance of this process in August 1968, Alexander Dubček was persecuted for twenty years. However, he saved his face, criticised the system, and by his articles and speeches, he retained his faith in progress and freedom. After the fall of total ism in November 1989, Alexander Dubček returned to active politics and was elected the Chair of the Federal Assembly of the Czechoslovak Federative Republic. He died in November 7, 1992 in Prague, at the age of seventy, after being fatally injured in a car crash. Alexander Dubček became the symbol of democracy and humanity. As early as in his lifetime, this charismatic politician earned affection and respect of millions of simple people and important public servants as well by his courage and modesty.
