In the valley of the Slaná river and between the spurs of Slovenské rudohorie mountains and the plains of the Slovenský kras (Slovak karst) there is located Rožňava - the town of famous traditions of mining industry, education and crafts, the seat of the bishop, administrative and cultural centre of the Gemer region. The first written reference to Rožňava is dated in the year 1291. The typical quadratic medieval square has been preserved as the largest square of this kind in Slovakia. It includes many rare architectonic monuments with dominating Renaissance watch tower in the middle of the square. Each road leaving the town leads to the unique tourist sights in attractive environment. Rožňava is a district town with 19 620 inhabitants, operating six primary schools and six secondary schools. The detail of copper-engraving vedutte of the town from the master licence of potter guild dated in the year 1828 is serving as a motif of FDC.
