The Bratislava City Museum is a historical institution in the capital of the Slovak Republic. It was founded by the Okrášľovací spolok (Bratislava Beautification Association) in 1868 thanks to the interest of townspeople and local patriots in the history of the city. After the formation of the Czechoslovak Republic, it fell under the control of municipal authorities and began cooperation with a local library and archive as part of the city’s Scientific Institutes. At the time, the Museum displayed its collections in the Old Town Hall and the Apponyi Palace, and from 1945-1990 was operated as an independent facility of the National Committee. The Museum's collection then shifted from an artistic and historical focus to more of a documentation of the political and social life of the city.  Newly acquired pieces and specialized exhibitions increased the size of the collection including exhibitions on arms, pharmacy, arts and crafts, clocks, ancient Gerulata and the cultural heritage monument of Devín Castle. In addition to its rich inventory, the Bratislava City Museum is a cultural and educational institution for the capital city providing science and research and is funded by the Bratislava City Council. The Museum has placed 10 specialised exhibitions in the following historical buildings: The Museum of Historical Interiors and the Museum of Viticulture (Apponyi Palace), the Museum of the City History (Old Town Hall), Museum of Arms (Michael's Gate), Museum of Pharmacy (Red Crayfish Pharmacy), Museum of Clocks (The House of the Good Shepherd), Johann Nepomuk Hummel Museum, Arthur Fleischmann Museum, Ancient Gerulata Museum and the cultural heritage monument of the Devín Castle. The Museum aims to promote awareness of the capital's history through acquisitions, archaeological research, shows and exhibitions and contributes to the commemoration of the city by publishing findings, organizing conferences, and offering cultural and educational programmes. All of these activities play an important role in the cultural representation of Bratislava.
