Všeobecná úverová banka (VÚB) decided, in the 1990s to build a new seat and in 1994 launched a competition for the architectural design of the building. The architect Ján Bahna, together with his team members, Ľubomír Závodný, Igor Palčo and Miloš Juráni, won the competition. The building was built according to their project in 1996. Ján Bahna (born in 1944), professor at The Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, an excellent Slovak architect, is the designer of a number of remarkable buildings, e.g. the former department store Ružinov or the reconstruction of the University Library in Bratislava. Ľubomír Závodný (born in 1959) was later, among other things, the designer of the Tatra banka project on Mierové Square in Bratislava.
The architects designed a complex with an 88-metre-high tower, which is depicted on the postage stamp itself. The tower was formed in an elegant oval shape that demonstrates its perseverance and refinement to this day, even though other high-rise buildings have risen in the area around it. The oval lines are also visible at night; each floor is accentuated by a narrow line of blue light. Nearly all of the floors in the tower are occupied by the bank’s administrative employees and there are two stairways and six elevators in the rear rectangular section of the building. On the top floor, there even used to be a pool with a view over the city.
The main entrance is situated at the bottom of the tower facing towards the city. The Board of Directors and Heads of departments have their offices situated on the floors above the main entrance. The drawing on the first day cover includes the three lower wings of the whole complex. The bank branch, representing the only space open to the public, is situated in the arc-shaped wing, shown in the foreground of the drawing. The wing situated along Mlynské Nivy Street includes offices and the employee dining room and the left part of the wing includes further offices, the kitchen and other service premises including the entrances into the underground car parks.
It received the Building of the Year Award and the architects received the Dušan Jurkovič Award for its architectural design in 1997.
