Žilina is one the oldest town in Slovakia. Its territory was settled already in Paleolithic. The first mention about the Žilina as a town come from the 1312, to the royal town was raised by king Karol Robert in 1321. Central European importance has privilege for Žilina's Slovaks from the 1381 which was issued by king Ľudovít Veľký during his visiting of town on May 7, 1381. The document has been preserved in description from 1431, it was proclaimed as a national cultural memorial.
