The Tatra chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica) is a mountain animal and a rare sub-species listed in the Red Book as an endemic form with a very restricted habitat (the High and Low Tatras) and population of about six hundred. In view of this it must be considered an endangered species and is protected by law. It is of particular importance as an indigenous example of Slovakia's fauna, and has a unique position as the only large herbivore among mountain fauna.
