© Slovak Post, 2006 Semar is a character in the Wayang Golek traditional theatre. The Wayang puppet theatre has a very strong tradition not only in Java but also over the whole of Indonesia. It expresses the fight between good and evil. Semar, or Sang Hyang Ismoyo, is the older brother of the God Guru. The name Semara derives from the word sengsem (to lure) and Marsudi (to act, to search), so according to his name Semar prompts us to look for or carry out good things. His white face symbolises a teacher with a pleasant and honest appearance whose lessons can be happily followed by his pupils. Conversely, with the second teacher they suffer whilst also being afraid. His one tooth signifies that the teacher can only tell the truth, and his black body warns us against doing anything bad in the interest of achieving personal aims. The puppet represented on the stamp stands on a stand and measures approximately 69 cm. It can be removed from the stand, its head and arms can be controlled with straight sticks and it can stick its tongue out. The head is very finely carved with lively colours and subtle paint. The figure adorns a sarong. This type of puppet is made for the Asep Sunaryu artists who perform worldwide. Such puppets are among the most beautiful in Indonesia and are admired by children and adults alike.
