After half a century, the XXVII Olympic games return to take place under the Southern Cross. In 1956 they were held in Melbourne following the dramatic revolutionary events in Hungary and the bloody intervention by Soviet tanks. This led to the first boycott against this intervention and the Dutch sportsmen refused to take part. Issuing post stamps with sport motives became tradition in the emission policy of the participating countries where Olympic success is expected. Our Olympic post stamp features sport shooting. Howerever our watermen and basketball players are also expected to take medal positions. We lay our hopes on swimmers. After the gold, silver and bronze trophies from Atlanta in 1996, our Olympic collection could be enriched by more precious metals. Lets's believe that the Olympic games in a country of green Olympic circle will be games of peace, honest competition " ...for the sake of sport!"
