The Church of St. George (sv. Juraj) at Kostoľany pod Tríbečom (in the district of Nitra) The church - a pre-romanesque structure from the first half of the 11.th century - is a national heritage monument. It was built on the remains of a fortress in a settlement of which part belonged to the Zobor monastery. The oldest part of the church, with the square presbytery and rectangular nave (depicted on the stamp), is an exemple of one of the basic types of ecclesiastical architecture used in Slovakia folowing the introduction of Christianity. The painting, from the latter half of the 11.th century, is the oldest preserved fresco of significant size in Slovakia. Its various biblical scenes - the Annunciation, Visitation, the three kings following the star and (reproduced on the FDC) the Adoration of the Magi - reveal in their archaic character and linear stylisation the inspiration of the western pre-romanesque model. The cancellation features a font (early 13* century) from the interior of the church.
