The Power Plant in Piešťany was built in 1906 as a municipal mazut power plant and remained in operation until 1945. The building itself is relatively tall with machine equipment at its centre and a simple façade consisting of a brick face and quarry-stone plinth. The most interesting brick work can be found in the cornices where its design possibilities are fully exploited in the form of dentils and other interesting ornamentation. At the time of opening, the plant was equipped with three 90-horsepower diesel engines, two 51 kW generators and one 64 kW generator. The generators were designed to produce 50 Hz AC and 3 000 Volts of power. 
In 2008, the power plant’s owner, Západoslovenská energetika, a.s. (ZSE) held an architectural design competition for students to redesign the premises. The winning project was designed by Michal Ganobjak and Vladimír Hain, and supervised by Doc. Ing. Eva Kráľová, PhD. from the Faculty of Architecture at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. The project was implemented by the architectural studio team of ADOM. M Studio (Ing. arch. Martin Paško and Ing. arch. Zuzana Zacharová) and reconstruction took place in 2012 – 2014. Due to its historic and architectural importance, the power plant in Piešťany was declared an immovable cultural heritage monument in 1995 and has been registered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments.
The Piešťany power plant is currently offering interactive exhibitions and workshops in the fields of ecology, energy and natural sciences for both elementary and high school students. Additionally, the Power Plant offers a wealth of programmes promoting science to the public, plus concerts, art exhibitions, seminars, training activities and guided tours.
