The word philately, in its French form philatélie, was first used by Georges Herpin in Le Collectionneur de Timbres-Postes magazine on 15th November 1864. The term philately comes from the Greek words phil(o) – loving and atéleia – exemption from payment (because a postage stamp indicates prepayment of postage). Philately as a hobby for collectors began to spread in Slovakia in the late 19th century. From this period, we only know of individual philatelists. The first association “ALBUM Stamp Society” (Známkový spolok ALBUM) was created in Kremnica on 30th March 1895, thanks to Pavol Križka − the Kremnica Municipal Archivist. After the end of the First World War, at the beginning of 1920s, the foundations of organised Czechoslovak philately were laid. The first Slovak competitive philatelic exhibition took place in Trenčín from 27th May to 3rd June 1928, under the patronage of the Union of Czechoslovak Philatelic Societies.
The National Congress of Slovak Philatelists took place on 17th May 1969 in Sliač, where the Union of Slovak Philatelists (ZSF) was established, with its registered office in Bratislava. The Charter of the ZSF, along with a proposal to join the Federation of Czechoslovak Philatelists was also approved. Prior to the establishment of the ZSF there were 152 clubs with 4,102 members and 17 extracurricular clubs of young philatelists with 182 registered members. Over the following twenty years the number of members grew, but since the establishment of the independent Slovak Republic in 1993 the numbers have gradually decreased, currently there are 59 philatelic clubs with 947 members and 12 extracurricular clubs of young philatelists with 129 members.
Throughout the fifty years of its existence, the members of the ZSF have organised 182 competitive philatelic exhibitions in Slovakia. They have also entered their philatelic exhibits in international and global philatelic exhibitions.
The ZSF is a founding member of FEPA – the Federation of European Philatelic Associations and FIP – the International Philatelic Federation.
