Všeobecná úverová banka (VÚB) decided, in the 1990s to build a new seat and in 1994 launched a competition for the architectural design of the building. The architect Ján Bahna, together with his team members, Ľubomír Závodný, Igor Palčo and Miloš Juráni, won the competition. The building was built according to their project in 1996. Ján Bahna (born in 1944), professor at The Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, an excellent Slovak architect, is the designer of a number of remarkable buildings, e.g. the former department store Ružinov or the reconstruction of the University Library in Bratislava.
