Philately is a fine and remarkable area of interest. It extends one’s horizons and is an excellent and pleasant way to relax. Organised philatelic activity in Slovakia goes back over 110 years. A convention of Slovak philatelic clubs’ delegates, held on 17 May 1969 in Sliač, provided a basic framework for the foundation of the today’s Union of Slovak Philatelists (USP). Currently the USP is a citizens’ association with approximately 1700 members in 93 philatelic associated clubs. It facilitates its members’ collection of stamps, promotes organisation of exhibitions, research and publishing activities, and promotes philately as a professional, cultural and educational activity. As a member of the Féderátion Internationale de Philatélie (FIP) and Federation of European Philatelic Associations (FEPA), the USP represents its members’ interests at home and abroad and collaborates with other philatelic organisations in Slovakia. In addition to its professional activities, the USP is devoted to educating young philatelists, cooperating in design and production of Slovak postal stamps and promoting stamps to the public. Thanks to the USP, philately has become part of the palette of Slovakia’s cultural activities. The USP webpage at www.zsf.chtf.stuba.sk provides detailed information on its activities. The commemorative stamp sets the USP into a broader European context. The logo used in the coupon presents its anniversary, and the FDC cancellation commemorates philately’s origins. It reminds us of the times when stamps were devalued by dumb cancellations, before J. E. Gray became the first registered philatelist and publisher of the first catalogue of postal stamps. His portrait is set into a perforation gauge on FDC, which along with the lens is the most-used philatelic tool. The stamp with coupon was issued using adjusted printing sheets so as to emphasise its commemoration of the anniversary of Slovakia’s most significant philatelic organisation. The issuance of this stamp is a significant step towards promoting philately to the broader public. Philately deserves support to help it become part of the meaningful use of our people’s free time.
