© Slovak Post, 2007 The Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava (BIB) is an international competitive exhibition of original children’s book illustrations. The work reproduced on the stamp is a book illustration awarded by the jury at the 20th year of BIB in 2005. In total 411 illustrators from 48 countries participated in this jubilee Biennial, with the BIB Golden Apple awarded to the Slovak illustrator Ľuboslav Paľo. The theme of the illustration was chosen from the award-winning book ‘Nicht erwischt!’ published by Bohem Press in Zurich. Paľo has made exceptional development in terms of changing various artistic techniques and styles from graphics to artistic expression. This he started to apply in his illustrations at the jubilee Albín Brunovský BIB-UNESCO Workshop in 2001, at which he experimented with previously unused techniques and expressions. There he found his unique artistic expression. He uses ostentatiously rich shining colours employing the tempera technique, compositionally dividing space and placing therein figures only lightly outlined by paintbrush. Such figures have their own small world, expression and personality, even their own unobtrusive humour. The author has found a visual and expression compromise – he has approached the young reader through his poetics, but without an intentionally attractive intrusion. Barbara Brathová
