Easter is a time of springtime festivals since long ago. It is one of the most significant Christian festivals commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the son of God. Easter is at the end of the Lenten season, which covers a forty-day period that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter Sunday. On Passion Sunday Slovaks practice a custom of the banishment of winter symbolised by a straw figure known as Morena. The Lenten season is a period of preparation for the high festival of the church year and ends with Holy Week. Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, Friday in Holy Week is the anniversary of the Crucifixion and Easter Sunday is the day of resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter itself is the occasion for numerous ceremonies and customs all over Slovakia. On Easter Monday girls may be either thrashed with willow switches or sprinkled with water. Easter switchers were presented with painted Easter eggs. From the earliest times, the egg was a symbol of rebirth in most cultures. This tradition survives in originally painted Easter eggs. Depending on the area of Slovakia, the ornamentation of Easter eggs is unique and artistically fabulous.
