We all know today that February 14th is a festival in celebration of the Christian martyr. This is the day that cards, letters or small tokens are sent to the object of one’s affection. In the third century A.D., the Roman Emperor Claudius II decreed that marriage was forbidden to all those in or wishing to join his armies. This idea was borne by his belief that single men made better soldiers and thus by eliminating this hindrance, he would build the strongest armies in existence. A Roman monk, Valentine, however fervently believed this decree to be a complete injustice and thus rebelled by marrying young couples in secret. It was not long before his actions were discovered and he was consequently imprisoned. Just before his death sentence was carried out, he wrote a farewell message to his jailer’s daughter, signing himself “Your Valentine”. We may wonder who first commemorated Monk Valentine and sent a message in his name. Gradually, February 14th became the date of lovers and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. On this stamp, a symbolical heart serves to celebrate Lovers’ Day, which enjoys world-wide recognition.
