Born on February 2, 1963, Andrej Kiska graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. He is married and has four children. After completing his studies, he was working as a designer in the company Naftoprojekt in Poprad. In order to try his luck, Andrej Kiska left for the USA in 1990. However, he returned back to Slovakia after a year and a half and established his first company. In 1996, he became a co-founder of the company Tatracredit, s.r.o. which implemented the catalogue instalment sale system Triangel and later on, also the instalment sale system Quatro. Triangel and Quatro became the largest systems of their kind in Slovakia. Nonetheless, Andrej Kiska sold all his shares in these companies to VUB Bank in 2005 and decided to focus on charity. In 2006, he together with his friend founded a non-profit organisation Dobrý Anjel (Good Angel) and donated one million euro for its funding. Dobrý Anjel provides help to families with children suffering from serious, life-threatening disease which brought families to a difficult financial situation. Today, the company represents the most successful non-company charity in Slovakia. In 2011, Andrej Kiska co-founded Dobrý Anjel also in the Czech Republic. While in 2006, he was awarded the prize Manager of the Year announced by Trend magazine, in 2011, he received Krištáľové krídlo (Crystal Wing Prize) for philanthropy.
Andrej Kiska decided to stand as a candidate for the office of the president of SR as an independent and non-party candidate in 2012. Elected by citizens in the elections of 2014, he assumed his office after the inauguration taking place on June 15, 2014.
The author of the photograph that inspired the postage stamp is Tomáš Benčík. The first day cover (FDC) graphically depicts the text of the presidential vow. The FDC postmark is based on a lime leave superimposed by the state emblem.
